Manchester United FC have crashed out of the Europa League following their 2-1 defeat at the hands of Sevilla FC. The Red Devils loss against the Spanish club meant that United have lost three semi-finals this season, showing lack of experience. With this defeat, the Red Devils end their 2019/20 campaign without a trophy meaning that the club has been trophy-less for three consecutive seasons now.
The game had a good start to it with both sides eager to calm their nerves by scoring a goal. With a couple of chances went begging at both the ends, United opened the scoring with the help of a penalty kick. Marcus Rashford was brought down in the box and Bruno Fernandes stepped up to score the penalty.
The knock Rashford got which gave him a penalty gave him visible pain and he didn’t move well for the rest of the game. After United’s goal, Sevilla dominated possession and United began to give the ball away easily. The Spanish club had a lot of the ball in the first half but created little clear-cut chances despite the possession.
Sevilla finally scored in the 22nd minute when Suso was found empty in front of goal, due to Williams’ poor positioning. Wan Bisakka was also found meandering forward and didn’t track the run which caused the cross to Suso’s goal. From then on, United dominated the entire game and came close to scoring several times with Rashford and Martial.
Rashford has looked lacklustre since the restart and did little to enhance his record since June. The Sevilla goalkeeper surely deserved plaudits though after saving about three shots in the span of three minutes from Anthony Martial. The Frenchman was wasteful in front of goal and it came to haunt United, as Sevilla scored later.
Sevilla scored in the 78th minute with De Jong, in which was their only chance in the second half. Lindelof and Williams were again to be blamed for the goal as the latter did little to stop the cross. Williams had a poor game and was constantly dribbled past on the right flank and showed the importance of a left-footed left-back.
Manchester United finish their season on the pitch and will now look at their board to get some signings to improve the team.
