The 30-year old centre-back has had a good United career but his performances weren’t up to par for Solskjaer. The Norwegian had shipped Smalling off to AS Roma on-loan, where Smalling has rejuvenated his career. He has gone on to become of the best centre-backs in Italy and reportedly has several suitors for him in the Serie-A and the Premier League as well.
But according to reports, Roma want Smalling on a permanent basis and the player is keen to join the Italian club. Fabrizio Romano has recently tweeted about United expecting a new bid for Smalling from AS Roma. In the wake of Smalling’s departure, the Red Devils have been linked to another young centre-back, Dayot Upamecano of RB Leipzig.
United will earn about £15-20m from Smalling’s sale, and looking at the current scenario, that amount can be used in recruiting players.
