Manchester United take on Chelsea in the Premier League this weekend as Solskjaer will take revenge against Frank Lampard. The Red Devils have been in fine form in the last couple of games, against Newcastle and Paris Saint Germain, and will look to do the same against Chelsea. The Red Devils have looked good going forward and were solid in defence but against Chelsea, Solskjaer will be expected to mix things up.
The Red Devils manager has already cleared out that Maguire, Greenwood and Cavani might be in contention to be in the squad. But all the three players will have to pass a later fitness test later tomorrow but other than there will surely be a lot of changes. Solskjaer is likely to use a different system against Chelsea and probably personnel as well.
Let us now have a look at how Manchester United might lineup against Chelsea in the Premier League.
THE 4-2-3-1
Solskjaer’s most used formation and system last season, the 4-2-3-1 is a real chance to be portrayed against Chelsea later tomorrow. The likes of Fred and McTominay have performed very well lately and will be expected to start tomorrow as well, due to Chelsea’s strong attack. The United boss will have to make some tough choices in the starting XI, especially in the wings and in the left-back spot.
Donny Van de Beek hasn’t started a game for the Red Devils yet and this might be the perfect opportunity. The Dutchman’s introduction will mean the United will play narrower and have intelligent footballers on the pitch. The selection of Tuanzebe is almost guaranteed, as the young defender was superb against PSG even after playing his first game in 10 months, against the likes of Neymar and Mbappe.
Pogba and Mata might have a lot of responsibility if they play in the game as they will have to move the ball around quickly.
THE 4-4-2 (Diamond)
The 4-4-2 (Diamond) formation was used by Manchester United in the latter second half, in the game against PSG. Solskjaer showed his versatility and tactical knowledge in that game, and he might be tempted to do the same in the Chelsea game as well. It might be a good tactic against the Blues because they don’t have a solid defence and make errors.
Alex Telles and Wan-Bissaka might make a difference in this game as Chelsea have quick wingers who are involved in the build-up. If the United full-backs have a good game, it will be difficult for Chelsea to win the game. If the Red Devils go with a front-two, the strike partner for Rashford will be another tough decision to make for Solskjaer.
THE 3-5-2
This is the system Manchester United used in midweek in the Champions League in Paris, and it worked wonders. Chelsea have an inferior attack when it is compared with PSG and thus the United boss might again use this system. But keeping in mind that Manchester United have another midweek game next week, Solskjaer will look to chop and change the squad.
