Roy Keane urges United players to cover up Ronaldo’s defensive burden

As reported by the Express, United legend turned pundit Roy Keane has urged United players to cover up for Cristiano Ronaldo’s defensive frailty.

The Portuguese striker is showing no signs of ageing and at 36 years old, he is scoring goals for fun. Against Tottenham Hotspur, he was again on the scoresheet. He has now seven goals and one assist in ten appearances for United this season.

In such glittering numbers hides one big weakness and that is Ronaldo’s defensive output. Many pundits have argued with the fact that Ronaldo should be involved more in the team’s defensive movements.

But former United defender Roy Keane has shredded off such claims and he believes that the current bunch of Manchester United players should shoulder his defensive burden. He has also praised the star striker for his impact on the squad.

He said:

“I think Ronaldo is a brilliant player, really sharp and you’ll get one or two years from him, and that’s why he’s in the team… Obviously, they have Cavani next to him to share the load, but Ronaldo was never going to be closing people down – that was never his strength.”

“They say the modern teams need to have 11 players sprinting, well you don’t. You can have one or two geniuses on your team and go, ‘Listen, you do the business’…Ronaldo is a genius. If you have him at your club, it can only be a plus.”

The interesting fact is that United’s centre-backs would need to take that extra defensive spot while playing with Cristiano Ronaldo. They need to track back quickly while Ronaldo will be the man responsible for finishing off any counter-attacking moves.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner hardly has any negative points in his game-play and if any, he will surely overcome it.
