Manchester United is currently in a state of a dilemma with the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
After deciding to fire Solskjaer on Sunday, the Red Devils are now looking for a permanent manager to replace Michael Carrick, who is currently leading the team on an interim basis.
Despite the fact that they were humiliated 4-1 by Watford, the club had no choice but to fire Solskjaer — the timing was not great.
Carrick will now be in the spotlight as he attempts to direct a sinking ship against Villarreal in their fifth Champions League group stage match on Tuesday night. However, the club’s decision-makers must deal with more than just the search for a new manager.
According to the Daily Mail, numerous members of the first squad are unhappy with the choice to keep coach Kieran McKenna on board. McKenna and Mike Phelan were expected to depart the club with Solskjaer, but both men have remained in their posts, which hasn’t gone over well.
The assistant coach has been criticized for his inability to command the players’ respect and for his boring training tactics. Some players have been shocked to see McKenna progressing to such a high level inside the team.
Fans rarely hear of players revolting against coaches behind the scenes, but that is exactly what is being seen here. Of course, the final product that fans see on game day is the result of the effort that is built into the training, not just by the players and the manager, but also by the rest of the backroom team.
McKenna is young and clearly intelligent, but if he has been unable to instil his ideology in the players he has coached at Carrington for the previous three years, that is unlikely to change now.
Although keeping McKenna and Phelan could be a decision made to maintain some stability, it appears that it will only be a matter of time until a new backroom team is appointed, along with a new permanent manager.
