Injury Update

Rangnick provides updates on Cavani and Varane’s fitness

Raphael Varane and Edinson Cavani will return to training next week, according to Manchester United interim coach Ralf Rangnick.

Both players have been out since suffering injuries in the 2-2 draw with Atalanta at the beginning of November. Varane and Cavani have resumed training this week, but they will not be ready for Wednesday’s Champions League match against BSC Young Boys.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News, both players will be available for selection soon, according to interim manager Ralf Rangnick, but they will not play in the final Champions League group game at Old Trafford, as United has already secured the top spot.

Rangnick said:

“They both cannot play tomorrow but they were part of the training session today, Edi even yesterday, for Rapha it was the first time he was on the pitch together with the team.Ā  If everything goes well I expect both of them back in full training next week, hopefully, Monday next week they will be participating in all training sessions.”

“Obviously, they’re both top players, we would be happy to have them on board as soon as possible but especially with Rapha and his injury record in the past, we need to make sure that we will have him until the end of the season so it’s also about sustainability and not only getting him fit as soon as possible.”

“It would be great to have both players available as soon as possible but as I said, if possible, for the rest of the season.”

Raphael Varane has been out since suffering a hamstring injury against Atalanta in the UCL group stage match, but he returned to training at Carrington on Tuesday after a month. He was involved in only light exercises.

Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani’s last appearance was in the same game, and he’s been dealing with a tendon injury, but he trained for the first time yesterday.

French striker Anthony Martial is now out with a knee injury that was still troubling him in the final training session before the win over Crystal Palace on Sunday. He will be unavailable to play against Aston Villa.
