Ewan Sharp joins Man United as the new assistant coach

As reported by the club’s official website, Ewan Sharp has been appointed as an assistant coach and analyst at Manchester United, reuniting him with interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

Rangnick has already hired Chris Armas, the former head coach of the New York Red Bulls and Toronto FC, as an assistant, as well as sports psychologist Sascha Lense, who has previously worked with both.

Rangnick had no intention of entirely replacing United’s key coaching staff. According to recent reports, he wanted both Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna to stay, but their departures, as well as Martyn Pert’s, have prompted the addition of new faces.

Carrick announced his departure immediately after his last game in charge against Arsenal earlier this month, after serving as caretaker manager for a short time. He is likely to spend some time away from the sport with his family.

Meanwhile, McKenna has taken the chance and accepted his first managerial job with Ipswich Town. As assistant manager, Pert has followed the 35-year-old to Portman Road.

Sharp was previously familiar to Rangnick from his time with the New York Red Bulls and most recently with Lokomotiv Moscow, according to a statement released by United.

Sharp has previously worked with Armas, most recently as an assistant coach for Toronto FC, where he was responsible for opponent scouting and match planning. Rangnick will have a core head coaching team of four with the signings of Armas, Sharp, and Lense, thanks to Mike Phelan’s decision to stay at Old Trafford.

United haven’t played since 11 December, when back-to-back games were cancelled due to a COVID-19 outbreak, but they will face Newcastle on December 27.
