Ralf Rangnick failed to materialize a move for Paul Mitchell

According to Footmercato.net, Ralf Rangnick attempted but failed to attract a renowned director of football to Old Trafford.

AS Monaco’s Paul Mitchell has been targeted by both Newcastle and Manchester United in recent weeks but has decided to remain in Monte Carlo.

Mitchell rose through the scouting ranks at RB Leipzig before moving on to New York and RB Bragantino and has been an integral component of the Red Bull enterprise that Rangnick worked to build.

Prior to joining Leipzig, the Mancunian worked as a top scout for MK Dons, Southampton, and Spurs. At the latter, he is credited with discovering Dele Alli. Bild, a German publication, linked United with Mitchell as Director of Football post three years ago.

Rangnick’s failed effort to recruit Mitchell raises the question of where it leaves current director of football John Murtough to be the main man behind transfers.

When United eventually announced Murtaugh as their director of football earlier this year, eyebrows were raised. Many people accused United of not taking the role seriously and installing little more than a figurehead because it was an internal appointment and with little experience he was still promoted to the position of sporting director at Old Trafford.

However, it must be stated that Murtough’s first transfer window was a success, with the signings of Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane, Tom Heaton, and Cristiano Ronaldo.

However, a club of United’s stature requires a recruitment and scouting specialist with a broad understanding of the game and a large network of contacts. And, if Footmercato’s claim is right, it appears that Rangnick has recognized this and is finally attempting to correct it.

As a result of the revelation, it may only be a matter of time until Murtough’s job will be in danger.
