According to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United turned down the opportunity to sign Boubacar Kamara from Marseille during the January transfer window.
Last month, the Red Devils were expected to sign a new defensive midfielder, but they failed to make any signings. It has now been revealed that they were offered the option to sign Kamara at a cheaper price worth £15m, but they were not interested.
The club’s hierarchy has now preferred to sign a new manager before signing any new player.
While talking on his Here We Go Podcast, Romano said:
“Manchester United were offered the opportunity to sign Boubacar Kamara in the last days of the window but they turned down this chance because they will invest more money for the new manager. They want to wait and see what’s best.”
Boubacar Kamara is regarded as one of Ligue 1’s top young defensive midfielders, and he has been winning hearts with his impressive all-around abilities.

While his tackling and interception skills are his strong points, the 22-year-old has also excelled in passing, with a 90% success rate. The 22-year-old enjoys having the ball at his feet, averaging 64 passes per game, far more than Scott McTominay (40) and Fred (51).
He’s also capable of filling in as a central defender. With all of these abilities, he would have been a fantastic addition to Manchester United’s roster.
However, the club decided to pass up the opportunity. It’s not surprising, as our interim manager Ralf Rangnick had claimed before that he is not looking for new signings in this transfer window.
While Rangnick would have liked a good holding midfielder, the board likely decided the new signing would not fit the next manager. But after signing a new manager in the summer, Manchester United will certainly start negotiating with other players.
After entering the final six months of his contract, Boubacar Kamara is now free to negotiate with any other club. However, there is no guarantee that the midfielder will wait for their decision, as other clubs may jump at the chance to sign him soon.
