According to the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson is close to joining Newcastle United in a summer transfer. This season, the 25-year-old has not played in the Premier League and is looking for consistent minutes.
At the end of last season, Henderson had established himself as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first choice goalkeeper, but an injury sustained while playing for England, combined with the disruption of pre-season due to COVID-19, has put a stop to his progress.
He’s been sitting on the bench since last summer, making only three appearances in all competitions this season, one in each cup round.
Dean Henderson signed a new long-term contract with the club in 2020, but speculations suggest he may be on his way out, with a deal with Newcastle reportedly close.
According to reports, Dean Henderson is close to signing a deal to join Eddie Howe’s team this summer. Henderson travelled to Newcastle on Wednesday for meetings with the Tyneside club, where he discussed a season-long loan but did not rule out a permanent transfer.
If the deal goes through, it will bring an end to six months of speculation following his failed move to Newcastle in January.
Dean Henderson’s ascent through the United ranks have been phenomenal but it’s a shame that such a quality goalkeeper is leaving the club.
However, David de Gea’s outstanding form this season is unquestionable, and it’s difficult to argue in Henderson’s favour. Incoming manager Erik ten Hag may be forgiven for sticking with De Gea.
Henderson is expected to become the first choice at Newcastle right away, and United will be well balanced in terms of their outgoings this summer.
