Mike Phelan will not be a part of Erik Ten Hag’s coaching staff

According to the Daily Mail, Mike Phelan will be one of the names to leave Manchester United’s coaching staff ahead of an internal shake-up this summer.

Phelan worked under Sir Alex Ferguson as a player and assistant manager before returning to the club in 2019 to assist Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. With Erik ten Hag now in charge, the Dutchman will create his own backroom staff in order to get United back on track next season.

Mike Phelan will not be in the dugout with Ten Hag. In addition, first-team coaches Chris Armas and Ewan Sharp, as well as psychologist Sascha Lense, are expected to depart.

Because he was brought in after Ralf Rangnick, Lense had a more difficult position. After he joined the club on such a short-term basis, the first-team players felt they couldn’t open up to someone they didn’t know.

Richard Hartis, the goalkeeper coach, and Eric Ramsay, the set-piece specialist, will both remain at the club.

Mitchell van der Gaag and Steve McClaren have already been confirmed as Ten Hag’s assistants, with preparations for a new first-team coach to join the group.

As someone who knows what it takes to get United to the top, McClaren is a good successor for Phelan.
