Manchester United handed a major boost in their pursuit of signing Cody Gakpo

Manchester United have been handed a major boost in the race to sign PSV Eindhoven’s Cody Gakpo. The board are keen to add the Dutch player to their ranks and want to convince the player to force a move.

However, the Eredivisie club’s failure to qualify for the Champions League will have a big impact on Gakpo’s future. Last night, PSV Eindhoven lost to Rangers in the second leg of the Champions League play-off match. The 23-year-old attacker captained his side in the second half of the match but failed to win the contest.

According to the Manchester Evening News, Gakpo’s future was largely dependent on the club’s chances to qualify in the most prestigious competition. The Netherlands international had earlier revealed that he would leave PSV Eindhoven if they didn’t qualify for UCL.

He said:

“We must first focus on and try to make it to the Champions League. Then it is more likely that I will stay. I don’t think I have said anywhere that I am leaving, so there is definitely a chance that I will stay.”

It has been reported that United will submit a €25m bid for Gakpo but his parent club may hold on for more.

The 6ft 1in winger is high on United’s transfer wish-list and his ability to play both, as a left-winger and a striker will give more options to Ten Hag.

With Ronaldo’s future being uncertain and Martial’s injury being a stumbling block, the Red Devils could play Gakpo in front. He can also slot in as a left-winger which is his natural position.

United are accelerating their attempts to bring Antony to Old Trafford and the fans would be able to witness a completely revamped attacking unit.

Gakpo had scored 21 goals and provided 15 assists for the Eredivisie side last season and no doubt, he will bring a new spark to our starting XI.
