Anthony Martial set to miss Southampton trip due to Archilles injury

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has revealed that striker Anthony Martial will miss Saturday’s trip to St. Mary’s stadium due to an injury.

The Red Devils will play their second away game of the season and will be without the services of the Frenchmen yet once again.

The 26-year-old has been struggling with a hamstring injury after the preseason games. He did perform admirably in the practice games but couldn’t keep himself fit for the matches against Brighton and Brentford.

Martial was awarded a cameo off the bench in the second half against Liverpool and he provided a crucial assist for Marcus Rashford. The fans were happy to see him back on the field but the recent update given by the manager will bring more concern.

Speaking with the club’s official website, Ten Hag said:

“Anthony Martial is not fit. He came out with a problem on his Achilles, [coming] out of the game, so we have to wait. I cannot tell a prognosis how long it takes but, of course, I hope that he will be available for the next game [Leicester].”

The fans will hope that Martial will be fit for the clash against Leicester City. As things stand, the manager will either prefer to play Ronaldo upfront or use Rashford as a striker against the Saints.

The French striker’s injury will further fuel rumours that the board will be looking to sign a new striker rather than depending on an injury-prone player.

The 26-year-old has struggled with injuries and this was one of the reasons behind his inconsistent career at Old Trafford. It remains to be seen whether the club takes action and recruits a new striker before the deadline day.
