Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has talked about his trust in Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea. The 31-year-old has been the gaffer’s No. 1 choice in front of the nets and has performed admirably well.
The Red Devils have kept two clean sheets in their past four Premier League games and were also successful in preserving another clean sheet against Sheriff. The goalkeeper and his defenders have performed wonders and helped the team keep it tight in defence.
United did experience a difficult start to life in the initial league games but bounced back after the manager found his best starting XI. United had fewer options in the goalkeeper spot and hence, decided to sign Martin Dubravka on loan from Newcastle United.
With Dean Henderson joining Nottingham Forest on loan and Tom Heaton being the third-choice keeper, it would be a no-brainer to start De Gea in the majority of the games. While speaking to the club’s official website, Ten Hag has revealed that De Gea has his backing and he has also hailed the keeper for his brave performances.
He said:
“That is clear – his experience helps us a lot. He organises and leads the back four. It’s really important to give the team the right mentality and the attitude to win games.”
De Gea has already spent more than ten years at Old Trafford and is the second-highest-earning player in the squad. These numbers have further increased his confidence to drive his team in crucial games.
Under, Solskjaer he has frequently seen wearing the captain’s armband and his experience has made him a key central figure in the dressing room. United may look to sign a goalkeeper next summer as Dubravka’s deal will expire.
However, it would be difficult to displace De Gea until and unless the player gives a reason to do so.
