Former Manchester United captain Antonio Valencia has signed for LDU Quito in his homeland of Ecuador following the end of his 10-year stint at Old Trafford.
Valencia was the captain of Manchester United during the latter stages of his career but his form was on the decline as he fell out of favor with the managers and fans as well. The 33-year-old joined the Theatre Of Dreams from Wigan Athletic back in 2009 and made 339 appearances in a United jersey netting 25 times and laying off 62 assists in his decade long stay in the red half of Manchester.
United decided against extending Valencia’s contract for another season and released the Ecuadorian on a free transfer. During his spell at United, Valencia won two Premier League titles, two League Cups, One FA Cup and one Europa League in a successful period at Old Trafford.
Valencia was playing for his nation in the Copa America but Ecuador finished at the bottom of their qualifying Group. There were reports that linked Valencia to joining his former teammate Wayne Rooney at DC United but instead the defender joined LDU Quito.
The right-back was announced in a video which showed him walking into the dressing room and putting in the number 25 jersey, the same number he wore during his time at United. LDU Quito is still 7th on the Ecuadorian Serie A midway through the season with the next half set to begin on July 7th.
