Businessman Michael Knighton has provided an update on his planned hostile bid to takeover Manchester United.
The former United staff member had revealed that he is aiming to buy the club amid ongoing tensions regarding the ownership. The Glazers have been reluctant to sell the club even after the fans demanded a sale of the club.
In a recent tweet, Knighton revealed that his plan is making progress and the fans will be optimistic that the new suitors will find a solution soon.
As revealed by the Manchester Evening News, Knighton tweeted:
“Thank you ALL for the wonderful messages of support. There is much going on behind the scenes. Things are moving forward as planned. I apologise I can’t be on this platform more, just bogged down in meetings. God bless and every good wishes to all of you. Your support is greatly appreciated.”
The businessman has also admitted that he has backing from a consortium which would make things easy for him.
However, the major stumbling block is the reluctance of Glazers to sell the club. The current United owners are ready to sell a minority stake in the club but they are not willing to sell the club as a whole.
Knighton had tried to buy the club in 1989 but his deal failed to materialize and he soon joined United’s backroom staff group.
As things stand, England’s richest man, Sir Jim Ratcliffe is also interested in buying the club and it would be interesting to see who will be able to lure the Glazers into selling the club.
