Manchester United’s rumoured pursuit of Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak may have received a big transfer boost, according to the Daily Mail.
Oblak has recently been linked to the Red Devils, and it could make sense to keep an eye out for potential replacements for David de Gea, whose contract is about to expire.
Atletico may be planning for Oblak’s departure given he has recently established himself as one of the top goalkeepers in the world and might replace De Gea at Old Trafford.
Diego Simeone’s team is now keeping an eye on Aston Villa shot-stopper Emiliano Martinez because they are having second thoughts about keeping Oblak. Villa won’t want to lose the Argentina international, but Martinez is viewed as a player who could replace Oblak easily.
However, the goalkeeper would find a move to Madrid tempting because of the potential to play Champions League games, which may put Villa in a difficult situation.
After De Gea’s excellent service for more than a decade, it would be interesting to see whether United sign a new No. one keeper. The Spanish shot-stopper is unquestionably destined to become a club legend.
Nevertheless, there is little place for sentiment as Erik ten Hag works to rebuild this team. De Gea no longer appears to be performing at his best, and it is unclear whether he actually fits the new manager’s style of play.
