Tyrell Malacia has had a successful start to life at Manchester United, nearly right away emerging as Erik ten Hag’s first-choice left-back.
After starting the first two games, Luke Shaw—a mainstay in the lineup for the past four years—was benched in favour of Malacia.
The 23-year-old is also a consistent player in the Louis van Gaal-led Netherlands squad. During this international break, the former Feyenoord defender did not start either of their UEFA Nations League games, but there was an intriguing discussion following their match against Belgium.
Malacia, who usually plays on the left side of the defence, came on as a substitute for Nathan Ake in the 1-0 victory. As opposed to a wing-back or typical full-back, he was deployed as a left-sided centre-back.
The United defender acknowledged the fact that he disagreed with Van Gaal’s choice to use him there but insisted that he must play on after speaking with the manager.
As reported by the Telegraaf, he said:
“I went two or three times too much forward. That is not possible in this position as quickly. But I was corrected by others. I didn’t agree with it at the time, yes. That’s right.”
“After the game, we talked about that moment for a while and then it was over. I’m comfortable with United at the moment. The national coach thinks that I should also be able to play in the centre of the defence. But I feel best on the left.”
Malacia will now return to Manchester in preparation for Sunday’s historic Manchester derby, in which he most likely will make his debut.
While Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City continues to pursue a third consecutive league title, United will be trying for five straight victories on the road. The Red Devils have won two of the last three meetings in this matchup at the Etihad Stadium.
