As stated by the Manchester Evening News, former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes criticised Jadon Sancho and Antony’s performance in the derby match against Manchester City.
Erling Haaland and Phil Foden both scored three goals as United were humiliated 6-3 by their rivals at the Etihad Stadium. Scholes posted a photo of Ryan Giggs and David Beckham during their prime on Instagram mocking United attacker attackers Sancho and Antony for their lack of defensive contributions.
The legendary midfielder seemed to be making fun of the wingers for failing to support Tyrell Malacia and Diogo Dalot at the back against Manchester City. The two full-backs were quite often exposed by the Man City attackers and they didn’t have any support from the front-line players, who failed to track back.
Posting a photo of Ryan Giggs and David Beckham on social media on Monday morning, Scholes appeared to be making fun of both of those players stating: “Anyone remembers when wingers used to help their full-backs?”
Giggs and Beckham were well-known for their offensive skills but also provided outstanding defensive support for Denis Irwin and Gary Neville during their time at Old Trafford.
This could be a lesson for the United wingers who need to track back when needed and not let their full-backs sock up all the pressure from the opposition attackers.
Erik ten Hag had the option of bringing in Cristiano Ronaldo to cover the flanks up front. But Ronaldo sat on the sidelines for the duration of the Manchester derby as the gaffer didn’t want to hurt his legacy.
