Manchester United approach Edwin van der Sar for the director of football role

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag reportedly had a conversation with Edwin van der Sar last week about a potential return to England as the director of football.

The 51-year-old goalkeeper had spent six years with the Red Devils, enjoying success that included four Premier League titles and the Champions League.

The former United star has been the Dutch club’s CEO since 2016. Because of his efforts in Amsterdam over the past few seasons, he has been extensively linked with a return to take the role of the director of football.

At Ajax, Van Der Sar expertly supervised some excellent football decisions and worked closely with Ten Hag. The former United star was the reason behind the successful capture of Lisandro Martinez and Antony by United during the summer transfer window.

The former goalie and Ten Hag spoke last week about a potential transfer to Old Trafford, according to The Mirror. The Dutchman declared last year that he was very pleased in Amsterdam, but he wouldn’t rule out returning to Manchester in search of a new challenge.

Ten Hag left the Dutch powerhouses for Manchester United over the summer after leading them to three league titles and two Dutch Cup victories.

Under Ten Hag’s direction, the Red Devils had a difficult start to the season, dropping their first two Premier League matches against Brentford and Brighton & Hove Albion. However, the 20-time English champions have now turned the tide by remaining victorious in nine of their past 12 matches across all competitions, and they recently defeated Tottenham Hotspur by a comfortable 2-0 scoreline.

It remains to be seen whether United will be sharp enough to lure one of the greatest CEOs in today’s modern-day football.
