After watching Manchester United claim a draw at Stamford Bridge, Erik ten Hag criticised Chelsea supporters for shouts directed at Raphael Varane.
In the intense match at Stanford Bridge, Casemiro’s late equaliser ensured that the points were split between the Premier League giants. However, the game was ruined by appalling homophobic shouting from the away section and foul language directed against Varane.
Ten Hag was made to take responsibility for the yelling from United supporters when he should have been celebrating his team’s strong performance, which helped them go six games without a loss. He also criticised Blues supporters for their reaction to Varane’s injury.
Just before the hour mark, the Frenchman fell to the ground and departed the field in tears as his chances of competing in the World Cup took a significant hit. Ten Hag was also dissatisfied with the response he received from the home crowd.
While speaking to the club’s official website, he said:
“I think it doesn’t belong in the stands but when I call the stands, I mention the stands, I mean the whole stadium. Because also when Rapha Varane came out, it was the same, the other side, the Chelsea fans. So we don’t do it.”
Following the game, the United fans who shouted the homophobic chant were criticized by the Football Association. However, the club said that eliminating homophobic comments from the game is their only priority.
Ten Hag, on the other hand, was satisfied with how his team played at Stamford Bridge. Due to the draw, they are currently ranked fifth in the Premier League, just one point behind Chelsea, who hold the final spot needed to qualify for the Champions League.
