As reported by the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United received an unexpected boost before their Europa League encounter against FC Sheriff on Thursday night as their manager Stjepan Tomas abruptly left his managerial position on Tuesday.
Tomas decided to resign even though his team still had a six-point lead at the top after the Moldovan team’s first league defeat of the year. Sheriff is now third in their Europa League group, and without a win, they would not advance past the group stage.
After their recent defeat, Tomas criticised himself and he also admitted that his players were worried about the forthcoming match against United.
Even though FC Sheriff has only been a club since 1997, this United match is undoubtedly one of the most important in their brief history because they previously defeated Real Madrid in the Champions League during the 2021–2022 season.
A club statement thanked Tomas, who had only been in charge for four months, for his contribution to the development of the club.
Surprisingly, this is the second manager to resign from their position in United’s Europa League group; Omonia Nicosia fired Neil Lennon last week.
Due to the most recent managerial change, the new manager will only have two days to prepare and build up the team for the United encounter.
Jadon Sancho and Ronaldo scored goals for United in their recent victory over the Moldovan team. A win on Thursday is essential to keep the pressure on the group leaders, Real Sociedad, as United is still in second place.
