Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim has admitted that his club dreams of signing Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo, but they are currently unable to pay his huge wages.
Since Erik ten Hag took control at Old Trafford, the 37-year-old’s story has become more complicated. Despite being the club’s leading goal scorer last season, Ronaldo has had trouble getting playing time this season.
The Portuguese star submitted a transfer request in the summer with the intention of leaving United for a Champions League team, but nothing materialised and he stayed in Manchester. He has played in eight Premier League games this year, however, just two of those games have been starts.
Ronaldo refused to enter the field during the Reds’ 2-0 victory over Tottenham last week and left the field before the final whistle. As a result, United manager Ten Hag left the former Real Madrid forward off the team for the trip to Chelsea.
Amorim was questioned about the prospect of signing Ronaldo before their crucial Champions League matchup with Tottenham.
As reported by the Metro, he said:
“Ronaldo is a top player. He is a Manchester United player. Everybody in Sporting dreams of the return for Cristiano but we don’t have the money to pay his wages.”
“I think he is happy in Manchester but is not playing so that is the problem. But I have my problems so it is Ten Hag’s problem! I am very happy with my players, no problem at all at the moment.”
As per reports, Ronaldo and Manchester United are ready to part ways in the January transfer window following the Qatar World Cup 2022 but the exact way of transfer is not known. Due to the high wage demands, the Red Devils do not believe that just releasing the five-time Ballon d’Or winner as a free agent is the best course of action.

After that, the Red Devils will continue their Premier League push for the top-four finish by playing against West Ham on Sunday.
