United are leading the race to sign Atletico Madrid star Marcos Llorente

According to the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United is the front-runner to sign Marcos Llorente from Atletico Madrid.

There is much discussion surrounding the 27-year-old’s future in Spain. Additionally, the Red Devils are in a strong position to sign the midfielder from Los Rojiblancos.

Liverpool is also interested in Llorente, in addition to the Old Trafford team. The Spaniard still has over five years present on his present contract. He might, however, be available for a fee of around £35 million.

Llorente transferred from Real Madrid to Atletico in the summer of 2019. With Los Blancos, he rose through the youth divisions. Diego Simeone eventually signed the midfielder, after he was unable to make the first squad. The midfielder spent the majority of his time as a defensive midfielder for the Santiago Bernabeu team. He has, however, filled a variety of roles while playing with Los Colchoneros.

The career of the 27-year-old has taken off as he plays higher up the pitch. And with time, Simeone’s team has come to rely heavily on the midfielder.

Evidently, United needs to strengthen a few important areas of the team. First off, Anthony Martial’s fitness concerns mean that there are now several gaps at the forward position. This season, the Frenchman has missed a number of games due to injury.

The right-back position also needs more depth. Under Erik ten Hag, Diogo Dalot has consistently been a key player of the squad. Aaron Wan-Bissaka hasn’t played in many games, thus the Portuguese must carry the burden. The 27-year-old has, however, played both right back and as a second striker under Simeone. Thus, if United signs the Spaniard, his adaptability may be useful.
