As reported by the Daily Star, David de Gea should accept a wage cut if he wants to stay at Manchester United beyond the summer transfer window.
The Spaniard earns £375,000–a-week, making him the club’s second-highest-paid player. Club executives want to cut that amount by at least £100,000. The goalkeeper’s contract expires at the end of the current campaign, though United has the option to extend it by an additional year.
According to the source, United wants to reduce De Gea’s weekly pay by at least £100,000; however, no discussions concerning his future have yet occurred. The 32-year-old wants to stay at Old Trafford but he will need to take a pay cut in order to secure his place at the club. De Gea’s whole game has been under a lot of criticism, especially while playing for Ten Hag, a manager who expects his goalkeepers to leave their positions and participate in build-up play.
However, the Spanish star has helped the team whenever needed and will be having ample amount of time to prove himself before next summer. Even then Ten Hag would prefer a goalkeeper with better ball-playing abilities.
It will probably depend on whether De Gea is willing to compete for his position when a new goalkeeper joins or whether Dean Henderson comes back for a shot at becoming Old Trafford’s first choice.
Taking a pay cut would be an ideal option as it would force the keeper to make a decision which will help the club in the long run.
