United target Memphis Depay unsure of his future at Barcelona

Dutch striker Memphis Depay has revealed that his future at Barcelona is uncertain in the face of rumours linking him to a potential return to former club Manchester United.

The 28-year-old had a successful debut season at Camp Nou, scoring 13 goals in 38 appearances, after signing with Barcelona as a free agent from Lyon in the summer of 2021.

Despite his performances, he stumbled down the pecking order after Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha were brought in during the summer. The Dutchman appeared to be leaving during the recent transfer window and was linked to moves to United and Juventus in particular, but he ultimately decided to stay.

At the end of the season, Memphis’ contract is expected to expire. Given that Cristiano Ronaldo’s abrupt departure has left his former club in need of even more extra bodies up front, he may even leave Camp Nou in January. This has sparked rumours of a potential reunion.

As reported by the Mirror, he said:

“We have a good team that can prove things. I don’t want to think about the past, I’m focused on the World Cup. I also don’t want to think beyond this competition. I don’t know what will happen after the World Cup.”

The Dutch star has acknowledged that it is far from certain that he will stay at Barcelona, but he isn’t ready to consider his future with the club until after the World Cup.

Memphis, who has been sidelined for nearly two months due to injury, was unable to start in the Netherlands’ opening match against Senegal, which the Dutch won by a 2-0 scoreline. But now that he’s fully recovered, he wants to help his country in the prestigious international competition.

Meanwhile, United will be looking for alternative options in the market with Dutch attacker Cody Gakpo remaining the club’s favorite.
