Erik ten Hag has stated that he would like to add a new striker to the team in January, but only if the player meets the club’s financial and sporting requirements.
Ten Hag was questioned about Cody Gakpo’s impending move to Liverpool following Manchester United’s crushing 3-0 victory against Nottingham Forest.
After Cristiano Ronaldo’s tense departure, he repeated his desire to sign a center-forward in January but refused to discuss any specific players. If the Red Devils want to have a successful season, they must sign a centre in January. The following six months of club football will be very congested due to the World Cup taking place in the middle of the season.
United is still in the running in every competition, and the games will be played quickly. Ten Hag is desperately in need of attacking reinforcements, ideally a striker, after Ronaldo left.
As reported by The Athletic, the gaffer said:
“We are always in the market. But what you say, it has to match the sporting criteria but also the financial criteria.”
“We’ll do what we can to bring that player in who we need. I don’t talk about individual cases. We are looking for offensive players. We are looking for a striker.”
“It would be good (to get one in) because with the games coming, so many after each other, every three days, it’s tough and we want to play in all the competitions which we’re now in. We want to stay in those leagues.”
“So, hopefully we can keep going until the end of the season. You need numbers in the squad to cover them all.”
Gakpo, who was extensively linked to a move to Old Trafford, is reportedly set to sign with Liverpool. Given that he has been in deadly form this season, he would have been a welcome addition to United’s team.
But as soon as Liverpool learned that PSV Eindhoven was willing to sell its star forward, they moved with lightning speed. The addition of a top-tier player and the fact that Liverpool was able to snag Gakpo from United will both excite the club’s supporters.
To support their manager, the Red Devils must bring in a new striker in January. They might not finish in the top four spots in the Premier League without a new center-forward.
