Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has once again expressed his desire to add a new striker to the team during the January transfer window.
If the proper opportunity in the market doesn’t present itself, he is determined to avoid “burning money” senselessly.
Despite Marcus Rashford’s spectacular comeback under his guidance, Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract expiry in November has left Ten Hag with few attacking options. In the midst of a competitive top-four battle, the Dutch coach is concerned due to a lack of depth because Jadon Sancho is working out alone and Mason Greenwood is still suspended.
Since Ten Hag took over, United have only managed to score 24 goals in their first 16 Premier League games; the only team in the top half of the table with fewer goals is Chelsea, who have 20.The Red Devils are battling with Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, and the Blues for the two Champions League spots and therefore need to have proper squad depth.
Ten Hag has openly admitted that he needs new signings, even if he warned the Glazers against making the same mistakes as in the past and wasting money on the wrong player.
As reported by the Guardian, the Dutch boss said:
“I think we have a good team when all the players are available. But with many games coming up, I think there is a need [for a striker].”
“But you need one who can have an impact. Otherwise, you are just burning money, and you don’t strengthen the squad, and it doesn’t help you.”
Martial is now the only striker available to Ten Hag, and there are still concerns about his susceptibility to injuries.
When fit, the 27-year-old has been in good form, scoring five goals and dishing out two assists in ten games, contributing to a goal every 72 minutes. The Dutch manager has been pleased by Martial’s impact and, although wanting competition, would probably be willing to have Martial as his preferred frontman until the summer.
