Union Berlin snatch Manchester United’s best chance of signing a free-agent this January

As reported by Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United have missed the chance to sign Real Madrid star Isco, as German giants Union Berlin are close to securing a deal for the free agent.

After Christian Eriksen appeared to suffer a serious injury in the FA Cup victory against Reading, Erik ten Hag’s team is not ruling out making an emergency midfield signing on deadline day.

Isco would have been a cost-effective acquisition for United, as the club is looking for temporary deals only or for a lesser price.

The 30-year-old had previously been linked with United and a number of the Premier League’s major clubs, but he won’t be moving to England since Union Berlin is almost ready to complete a deal for him.

The player is currently available on a free transfer after Sevilla terminated his contract after his disastrous tenure at the club. It is possible to renew the agreement for an additional year after the initial six months.

Union Berlin’s effort to put up a serious title challenge will benefit greatly from the addition of Isco. They are in second place, with only one point separating them from defending champion Bayern Munich.

They preserved their momentum in the league with a 2-0 victory over city rivals Hertha Berlin over the weekend. Defender Christopher Trimmel dedicated the victory to Isco in anticipation of his impending transfer.

He is expected to fly to Germany to complete his medical. Isco is a player who, like Eriksen, prefers to play in a more creative and advanced role, but United have obviously missed the chance to get him because they haven’t shown any interest in him this month.

Even though Eriksen is expected to be out for a while, United’s stance on Isco has remained the same.

The Danish playmaker will undergo a scan to ascertain the extent of his injury after being seen leaving Old Trafford on crutches after their 3-1 FA Cup victory over Reading on the weekend.
