Despite Anthony Martial’s history of injuries this year, Erik ten Hag claims he still believes in the French striker since no Manchester United player has “spent more time at Carrington” than the French forward.
Martial is expected to miss tonight’s game against Leeds United due to yet another setback with his injury. The forward has only recently returned, scoring in a 3-0 victory over Nottingham Forest, having missed more than half of United’s games this season.
He was not present in the club’s last match, as United defeated Crystal Palace at Old Trafford on Saturday. Following back and thigh problems, Martial is now dealing with a hip injury, and there are rumours that Ten Hag will want to offload the Frenchman this year.
However, Ten Hag has admitted that Martial has put in more effort than anyone else this season, as evidenced by his commitment to training.
As reported by The Metro, he said:
“He is not always available, but also I see the other side when he is available. He was never 100 per cent this season but he had a big impact every time he is available, even when he is at 80, 85, or 90 per cent.”
“So we do everything and Anthony Martial is doing everything. I think he is the player who has spent the most hours at Carrington this season, to return to recover, to get back. It is really a pity for him that he is disappointed.”
“He is not always available and we want him to be always available because that will improve our game and because routines can’t become routines when you are not always available.”
Wout Weghorst was signed on loan by the Red Devils to fill the left by Cristiano Ronaldo and the Dutch striker has fit in quite well.
Ten Hag has frequently preferred to use the Burney striker in his starting XI in recent matches. Martial’s return may push him back to the bench but at the moment it seems that Weghorst may continue to get his chance to shine.
