According to the Sun, English striker Mason Greenwood has spoken with Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag for the first time since the allegations against him were dismissed in early February.
The 21-year-old was set to go on trial in November, but Greater Manchester Police revealed last week that the Crown Prosecution Service had dropped the allegations against him. There was no longer a realistic chance of conviction against Greenwood due to the withdrawal of key witnesses in this case.
Greenwood is still not eligible for selection by United, who are closely monitoring the player’s behaviour. There is no estimate of how long this internal inquiry might take. Ten Hag declined to comment on Greenwood’s status last week, but the two spoke on the phone shortly after the charges were dropped.
Since taking over as the Red Devils’ manager last summer, the Dutchman had not spoken to the United wonderkid prior to the phone call.
According to the Sun,
“Following his arrest in last year, the player and the club never directly communicated with each other. Greenwood hasn’t heard anything from the Old Trafford side in a very long time. When and if they communicated, it was never face-to-face and always via a third person.
“Therefore, the manager’s call was a major step for the 21-year-old, and he greatly appreciated it. But the manager has made it clear that the club will take the final call on the striker’s probability of playing for United again.”
Greenwood’s United contract runs through the summer of 2025. After making his senior debut for the Red Devils on March 2019, he has scored 35 goals in 129 games for the club.
