Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has backed Manchester United star Marcus Rashford to win the Premier League Player of the Year title.
The 25-year-old has played admirably for the Red Devils this year. Under Erik ten Hag, he has led the line superbly and he has been a critical part of the team’s attack.
In his recent article with the Telegraph, Carragher stated that he believes that Manchester City striker Erling Haaland will currently lose out to Rashford for the award.
He said:
“Step aside Erling Haaland. Marcus Rashford is currently producing performances of a complete Premier League striker. If votes were being cast this week, the Manchester United attacker would surely command the most support from his peers.”
The Norwegian striker moved from Borussia Dortmund to the Etihad Stadium in the summer of 2022 to play in the English Premier League. The 22-year-old has since taken the league by storm and possesses a quick turnaround when finding the back of the net.
In the short time he has been in the PL, Haaland has already broken a number of records. The Norwegian has played 32 times with the Citizens in all competitions, scoring 32 goals and dishing out four assists.
However, he has appeared a little slower in the past few weeks. Pep Guardiola’s side has faced difficulty in finishing off games. Although their striker has been quite effective, he has not contributed much to the build-up play.
Meanwhile, United attacker Rashford has challenged opposing defenders and appeared dangerous. The 25-year-old has made 37 appearances across all competitions this season, scoring nine assists and finding the back of the net nine times.
The forward has been among the finest in the world this year, particularly after the 2022 World Cup. Haaland has impressed the fans. Yet while our other strikers have struggled, Rashford has grabbed a few games by the scruff of the neck and produced some incredible results.
It doesn’t matter if the 25-year-old receives the player of the year award. But, he should work on maintaining his form for years to come.
