Rio Ferdinand slams Liverpool with ‘small-club mentality’ claim

Rio Ferdinand claimed that Liverpool had a “small-club mentality” following their weekend defeat by Bournemouth.

Six days after crushing Manchester United 7-0 at Anfield, the Reds lost 1-0 to the team struggling for survival. With Mohamed Salah missing a penalty, Jurgen Klopp’s team was unable to break down their relegation-threatened opponents after conceding a goal in the first half.

Their chances of finishing in the top four have been severely damaged, as the Merseysiders appeared to be back to their best in recent weeks.

Ferdinand has criticised the manner in which they celebrated against United before suffering a shocking defeat. The former United defender continued by criticising a number of analysts.

As reported by the Mirror, he said:

“That is a small club mentality. That screams small club. Screaming and shouting when they beat United, yes they battered us, hands up.”

The former United defender went on to call out several pundits:

“The way Souness and Carragher were celebrating, the way they were trying to antagonise the guys [Roy Keane and Gary Neville], and then their team goes and does that at the weekend. They should be ashamed of themselves.”

Even after losing badly against their fierce rivals, United got back to winning ways and showed their elite mentality by defeating Real Betis by a 4-1 scoreline.

Liverpool is now six points behind Tottenham in fourth place after the defeat against Brentford, their eighth loss in the league this season. Moreover, they’ve lost at Nottingham Forest and drawn at Fulham, which means they’ve lost to all three promoted teams.

The Reds have a difficult challenge ahead of them against Real Madrid after losing 5-2 at Anfield just a few weeks ago.
