According to The Athletic, Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane is the top target for Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag this summer.
The English star has had another outstanding season for the north London giants, scoring 23 goals and dishing out four assists in 39 appearances.
Despite this, Spurs won’t take home any trophy, which has given rise to rumours that the striker would be enticed to leave in the summer. According to The Athletic, Kane is Ten Hag’s top pick for the center-forward position, but it’s not certain if Spurs will sell him.
The 29-year-old’s contract expires in June 2024, and while he has supposedly been valued at over £100 million, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has yet to set a price for him. Kane’s main goal for the time being, is to help Spurs end the season strongly.
Ten Hag will have money to spend as a result of the £300 million credit facility, but United appears determined to prevent a repeat of the Frenkie de Jong-Kane transfer debacle.
United have options including Goncalo Ramos of Benfica and Victor Osimhen of Napoli. Evan Ferguson, a rising star for Brighton, is also a target for the team, but the 18-year-old wants a guarantee of playing time.
Two years ago, Kane was hotly rumoured to be moving to Manchester City, but Tottenham eventually persuaded him to stay by stressing that they had no intention of selling him.
This time, the scenario appears to be quite different. In July, Kane will begin the final year of his current deal, and Spurs run the risk of losing him to a free agent the following year.
United, therefore, has a decent chance of luring Kane away from north London, but the key question is how long they could wait for Kane to decide on his future.
Several of the top young strikers in international football, like Osimhen and Ramos, should find lucrative opportunities at the Red Devils if they return to the Champions League.
The Red Devils may be patient in their pursuit of Kane, but they would not want to repeat the De Jong drama by delaying their attention until August.
We believe that the club management should give Spurs and Kane until about mid-July to reach an agreement, and if that doesn’t happen, they should consider other options.
