Spurs 2-2 Manchester United Match Report | PL

Erik ten Hag’s side got off to a fast start in the first half, with Jadon Sancho putting us in front after only seven minutes. Marcus Rashford added a second just before halftime after grabbing onto a great Bruno Fernandes feed.

The hosts came out with a point to prove in the second half, and Pedro Porro volleyed them straight back into the game only 10 minutes after the restart. Spurs finally completed their comeback late in the game when Son Heung-min scored off Harry Kane’s soaring ball at the back post.

The draw leaves us in fourth position in the league rankings, two points below Newcastle United but having a game in hand on third place. United striker Sancho couldn’t have wished for a better start to the game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after replacing Anthony Martial in the starting XI.

After being given lots of room on the perimeter of the area, our no.25 put us ahead just seven minutes into the game. Rashford dropped deep to pick up the ball after a sweeping move out from the back, utilising his power to elude a tackle and send the ball to his fellow countryman down the left.

Sancho was given time to take a few touches before floating the ball into Forster’s bottom corner to give the Reds a fairytale start.

Sancho came agonisingly close to increasing our advantage just over 10 minutes later. Jadon took up the ball on the left again, but his shot was blocked. His rebound bounced off a Spurs defender and was then cleared off the line by Ivan Perisic.

Spurs’ clearest sight of goal in the first half came from full-back Porro’s corner, and David De Gea was called into action moments afterwards. Perisic, who was playing on the other flank, made a dashing move towards the near post and flicked his header at our custodian, who parried it away to keep our early advantage.

After connecting with Fernandes’ wonderful ball, Rashford found himself blocked right on top of the goal, Forster blocking the attempt with his knee.

Perisic then sprinted into acres of space down Spurs’ left before unleashing an attempt on De Gea’s goal, but our number one was up to the task once more. In the same period of play, when Perisic chose to keep the ball in play, United regained control and, due to a fantastic diagonal, were assaulting the Spurs end in a matter of minutes.

Rashford, on the other hand, was aiming to defeat Fraser Forster this time. Our no.10 surged towards the Spurs goal, sliding into space to smash beyond the shot-stopper and give United a two-goal lead at the break.

Spurs came out blazing in the second half and almost had an immediate impact but for some outstanding defence at the back, particularly from Lindelof, whose magnificent header averted a clean opportunity on goal.

Porro, though, gave the home team a chance to get back into the game ten minutes after the restart. The Spurs full-back position took the shot in stride, half-volleying the ball to cut the lead in half.

The Reds promptly reacted by nearly scoring a third goal of their own, with only the woodwork standing between Fernandes and another two-goal advantage. After gliding past the Spurs backline, our no.8’s shot hit the crossbar after he hoisted the ball over Forster. Wan-Bissaka tried to complete the follow-up with a diving header, however it was easily saved.

The hosts had a long period of possession during which they produced two excellent chances to tie the game at 2-2. The first of them went to Son, who was found with plenty of space at the back post, but the Korean could only cushion his attempt wide of De Gea’s goal. Eric Dier was an unusual target for the second, having wandered into De Gea’s goal.

Spurs quickly made their second-half domination count, netting the equaliser with 10 minutes remaining. After regaining the ball in the centre of the park, Kane flicked a cross-field pass to teammate Son, who was unmarked at the back post and finished past De Gea.

Casemiro came within a whisker of heading in a last-minute winner for the Reds when he met Luke Shaw’s looping cross at the back post, but the striker’s effort went just wide as we departed the capital with a point.
