Manchester United’s pursuit of Feyenoord goalkeeper Justin Bijlow has raised concerns for Dutch legend Willem van Hanegem. There have been conflicting reports regarding United’s interest in the Eredivisie-winning shot-stopper.
According to The Mirror, Bijlow is considered a more budget-friendly option if United’s alleged Financial Fair Play issues prevent them from signing Inter Milan’s Andre Onana. However, the Rotterdam-based publication 1908 has a different perspective on the matter.
They suggest that United could target both Onana and Bijlow, with the latter serving as a backup option at Old Trafford in case David de Gea and Dean Henderson depart.

Bijlow had an impressive season as Feyenoord won their second Eredivisie title in recent years. However, his performances at the international level have been disappointing.
Dutch legend Willem van Hanegem has expressed concerns about Bijlow’s abilities.
According to him, the 25-year-old has become overly obsessed with playing football and has neglected the primary objective of a goalkeeper—preventing goals. Van Hanegem believes Bijlow needs to return to basics and prioritize keeping the ball out of the net.
Speaking to AD Willem & Wessel podcast, the Dutch legend said:
“Look, he is by far the best keeper we have. But he is now only concerned with ‘how can I play football’. Before he got injured, he was much less concerned with that. Almost never. Now, he wants to show (everything he has), but it’s not necessary at all.”
“I just thought he was very bad at goalkeeping with the Dutch national team. For him, it blundered. You have to be honest. If he doesn’t keep (the goal) well, he’s not good.”
Feyenoord are likely to demand a £20 million fee for Bijlow. However, Erik ten Hag remains focused on signing Onana as his top choice. Onana’s ball-playing abilities, commanding presence, and sweeper-keeper skills make him an excellent addition to the Red Devils’ squad.
The question, though, is whether United will be willing to invest significantly in him given their limited budget from pre-sales. If United decides to pursue a more affordable option, Bijlow could emerge as a viable alternative.

The Dutch goalkeeper recently helped Feyenoord secure the league title after a 24-year drought. While the Cameroonian keeper should be United’s priority in strengthening the goalkeeping department, it wouldn’t be surprising if they also consider the latter as an option.
