Manchester United announce host of coaching changes in the academy system

According to the club’s official website, Manchester United have made several coaching changes within their academy system, appointing Travis Binnion as the new manager of the Under-21s team.

The club takes pride in its esteemed academy, which has produced numerous players who have gone on to become successful senior stars.

One notable example is Marcus Rashford, a graduate of the academy, who recently signed a new five-year contract with the club.

Additionally, Kobbie Mainoo is expected to be the next promising homegrown talent to make his breakthrough into the first team.

United have implemented several role changes in their academy system to maintain high standards and provide the best development and support for prospects at every age group.

The prominent change is the promotion of Travis Binnion, who previously managed the Under-18s and led them to victory in the FA Youth Cup in 2022. He has now been elevated to the position of Under-21 boss.

Mark Dempsey, the former Under-21 manager, will continue as a senior academy coach but has taken on additional responsibilities, which include working with players who are out on loan and handling player recruitment. These changes aim to strengthen the club’s academy setup and nurture young talents effectively.

In a series of coaching changes within United’s academy system, Coach Adam Lawrence will be promoted to the Under-18s manager position, having previously led the Under-16s team.

He will also retain his role as the head of player development for ages Under-13s to Under-16s, ensuring a smooth transition for young talents starting their scholarships.

Tom Huddlestone will continue as a player-coach for the Under-21s team. Former centre-back Paul McShane will take charge of the Under-15s team after providing support as an assistant coach for the Under-18s and Under-21s in recent years.

He will replace Martin Drury, who has been promoted to manage the Under-16s.nAdditionally, David Hughes and Colin Little will work flexibly across the Under-18s and Under-21s teams.

Lead goalkeeper coach Tommy Lee will focus on coaching the Under-21s group, while academy goalkeeper coach Kevin Wolfe will handle the development of the Under-18s shot-stoppers.

These changes aim to strengthen the club’s youth development setup and ensure the best support for the academy prospects at different age levels.
