Manchester United’s manager, Erik ten Hag, has given an update on Kobbie Mainoo after the young player suffered a freak ankle injury during the match against Real Madrid.
Mainoo has been in exceptional form during the pre-season for the Red Devils, notably shining in the team’s 2-0 victory against Arsenal in New Jersey.
Due to his impressive performance in pre-season, the 18-year-old was included in United’s starting lineup alongside Casemiro for the match against Real Madrid.
Unfortunately, just two minutes into the game, the young midfielder suffered an injury when Casemiro made a hard tackle on Rodrygo, causing him to fall onto Mainoo’s ankle. As a result of the injury, the young player had to be helped off the field by United’s medical team.

Following the match, Erik ten Hag stated that he currently has no information on the severity of Mainoo’s injury, but a thorough evaluation will be conducted shortly to determine the extent of the damage.
The manager expressed optimism that the injury is not severe and shared his disappointment, as he was eagerly anticipating Mainoo’s performance.
As quoted by the club’s official website, the Dutch boss said:
“I understand the question. But you can never tell straight after a game. We have to wait for what it is. So, hopefully, it’s not too bad and then chances will come. I wanted to see what levels he could play.”
“Against Arsenal, we were pleased with his performance. I wanted to see if he could repeat that, some days after, and from then, we would have conclusions. First, we have to wait for the diagnosis and, from there on, we will set conclusions.”
The 18-year-old expressed visible disappointment after missing the opportunity to impress in the match against Madrid due to an injury.
After the game, he was seen leaving the stadium wearing a protective boot on his left foot. Fans are hopeful that the injury is not serious and that he can make a quick comeback.
Amad Diallo also twisted his ankle in a previous match against Arsenal but managed to return to the bench for the game against Madrid.

In Mainoo’s case, there was contact from Rodrygo during the injury incident, but supporters remain optimistic about his swift recovery, considering the remarkable performances he has displayed.
Based on his current form, Mainoo appears to be a strong contender for a starting position in the Premier League curtain-raiser. The hope is that a clear update on the midfielder’s injury status will be available soon.
