Sporting CP midfielder Bruno Fernandes has ended speculation of his future by signing a new contract with the Portuguese club handing Manchester United a major transfer setback.
The 25-year-old Sporting CP captain had been a reported target for Premier League duo of Manchester United and Tottenham in the January transfer market, as well as LaLiga giants Real Madrid.
However, it seems like Fernandes has ended any possible chances of making a move away from the Jose Alvalade Stadium as he signed a contract extension with Sporting to keep him at the club until 2023.
At first, Fernandes was thought to be worth around €100 million in the summer transfer market though his buyout clause is said to have been increased by another €100million after his new deal.
Fernandes has been incredible for Sporting CP over the past few seasons and was also named Primeira Liga’s Player of the Year for the past two seasons, since joining the Portuguese club from Sampdoria back in 2017.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was hoping to lure in the talented 24-year-old midfielder who has been scoring and assisting goals on a regular basis for Sporting as the future of Paul Pogba at Old Trafford looks bleak. The Red Devils are struggling for form this season and could look to sign some high-quality players in the winter transfer window.
Upon signing his new deal with Sporting, Fernandes expressed his delight and gratitude as he spoke to the club’s website, “For me it is a great source of pride and recognition of my work, it is a sign that I am doing well, I have been doing everything possible to do my best for the club. [The new contract] is because of what I have done on the pitch, but it also shows that I love being at Sporting and I am proud to represent this club. You can expect more and even better things from me. I promise to show the same commitment and dedication so we can have more moments of glory than last season.”
