Manchester United midfielder Andreas Pereira has admitted that the Red Devils are “desperate” to win a trophy this campaign in order to prove their progress which has been made under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Pereira helped the Red Devils reach the semi-final of the League Cup on Wednesday following a 3-0 victory over League Two opponents Colchester United at Old Trafford.
The 20 time League champions won that competition, along with the Europa League, in Jose Mourinho’s first season in charge back in 2016-17, but they have not lifted a trophy ever since the continental success.
United are already 24 points behind Premier League runaway leaders Liverpool on the table, and the cup competitions once more represent their best chances of winning their first piece of silverware under Solskjaer’s reign.
However, the 23-year-old Pereira has stated that the drive for success within the squad, particularly those players that have progressed from United’s academy, is burning strongly this season as they look to show how much they have improved since Norwegian Solskjaer replaced the Portuguese ‘Special One’ Jose Mourinho.
While speaking to reporters, the Brazilian admitted that the whole squad is eager to win a trophy to prove their worth and show their evolution from youth players to senior squad members, “We are desperate to get a trophy; Everybody at the academy is raised to win trophies. We have been winning trophies since the academy days and we want to do it now with the first team. We have evolved a lot. Mentally we are more patient, we work for each other more and more and we have more confidence on the pitch”
