Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes that Scott McTominay has suffered a knee ligament injury in the 4-1 win over Newcastle United at Old Trafford overshadowing a great night.
The Scottish midfielder was hurt in the early stages of the Boxing Day fixture but stayed on the pitch for the remainder of the first half before being subbed off.
The 22-year-old combative Mctominay was replaced by World Cup-winning French midfielder Paul Pogba at the interval and was seen leaving the ground in crutches, which was a worrying sight for the United faithful amid a busy festive period of fixtures.
Although Solskjaer has not yet ruled McTominay out of contention for Saturday’s trip to Turf Moor against Burnley, he also praised the player for playing on through the pain following his clash with Sean Longstaff only 24 seconds into the game.
The 46-year-old Norwegian manager then admitted that McTominay might have done ligament damage to his knee but still needs to wait on the reports to assess the seriousness of the injury, “He’s done his ligament in his knee, probably. We don’t know how bad it is, so let’s see,”
Solskjaer further praised Mctominay for showing fight and character for staying and playing on until the half time whistle, “The boy has got the biggest heart of the lot. He played until half-time but we know when they stiffen up after. We’ll have to find out tomorrow, how he is. You see the attitude of the kid, of everyone, at the beginning of the game. I’m not sure if he’ll be ready for Saturday [against Burnley]. Probably not, but we’ve seen him recover before.”
