Former Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane has stated that French forward Anthony Martial’s costly miss against Liverpool showed why he is “not quite good enough” to play for a club as big as Manchester United.
The 24-year-old Martial signed for the Red Devils from French club Monaco in a reported £36million deal back in 2015 which was a record signing for a teenager at that point in time.
Martial already has 11 goals in all competitions this season but the United striker passed up a golden opportunity to equalize the score at Anfield in their 2-0 defeat against Premier League leaders Liverpool this Sunday.
The Red Devils were trailing to Virgil van Dijk’s early header and in the second half of the game, Martial controlled on his chest on the left-hand side of the penalty area but blazed over the crossbar with just Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson to beat between the sticks.
Egyptian talisman Mohamed Salah then wrapped up a Liverpool victory and the three points as well in stoppage time late in the game and former United captain Keane, bemoaned Martial’s inability to hit the target with his effort.
While speaking to Sky Sports after the game, the Irishman was fuming at Martial and his scathing remark was that the Frenchman should not play for the 20 time League champions, “Martial has come to Man Utd, and the big strikers score in the big moments, But that miss sums up his career at Man Utd in a nutshell. You hit the target. Excellent build-up play, but you have to hit the target. No excuses. The big strikers who are remembered by those supporters hit the target and the back of the net. That’s why that guy is not quite good enough for Man Utd. That moment summed him up.”
