Congolese defender Axel Tuanzebe has heaped praise on his fellow Manchester United club-mate Harry Maguire and explained why his centre-back partner fully deserved his recent appointment as the club captain.
Just six months into his Red Devils career, England superstar Maguire was given the captain’s armband on a permanent basis following the departure of Ashley Young to Serie A outfit Inter Milan in the January transfer window.
It is a tremendous achievement for Maguire that highlights just how highly he is respected by club manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the coaching staff and, perhaps most importantly, the players after making the move from Leicester City to Old Trafford in a world-record transfer fee for a defender.
Another player that has leadership skills and qualities is young defender Axel Tuanzebe as he captained quite a few teams in the United academy while progressing through the system and most recently the 22-year-old led out the senior team in the Carabao Cup tie against Rochdale at home.
Tuanzebe speaks with the maturity and wisdom of a much older player and has watched the summer arrival, Maguire, closely this campaign and the youngster is totally convinced that he is the right man for the job.
While speaking to reporters at a training camp at the Marbella Football Centre, Tuanzebe explained why Maguire deservedly got the captain’s armband, “Massive respect to him for getting the captaincy, For me, I don’t think it is ever about how long you have been somewhere. It is the impact you give and the time you spend with the lads. He’s had a massive impact on the club, he has been a real example and has managed to lead all of the time. We are improving. We are a young side and given time, I think we will be very strong and contending for real titles. But I just want to send massive congratulations to Harry, because I think he deserves it with the impact that he’s given to the club.”
