Former Manchester United defender Rafael has claimed that the Premier League giants must ensure they do not sign players who are only “coming for the money” at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils have invested huge sums in the playing squad since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in the summer of 2013, yet United have failed to get close to winning the Premier League ever since that time.
A lack of clear direction from a director of football and four changes in permanent manager has left Manchester United’s transfer policy mostly disorganized. The 20-time English giants spent significant money on fees and wages spent unsuccessfully on the likes of South American stars Angel Di Maria and Alexis Sanchez.
Under current manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the club’s transfer approach has shown remarkable improvement, with the former United striker making it clear he will only sign players who possess the right attributes as well as the suitable talent to play at Old Trafford. Solskjaer has also entrusted youngsters and put his faith in players coming through the academy.
The arrivals of Daniel James, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes since the start of the season have all proved to be positive signings, with Solskjaer also ensuring youngsters from the academy system are still given the opportunity to play alongside expensive transfer signings at the club.

Three-time Premier League champion Rafael wants his former employers to be sure they sign only those who want to move to Old Trafford for the right reasons and not for the money.
While speaking to ESPN, the Brazilian explained, “It has taken too long to get back on track, It’s been seven years [without the title]. We did some things wrong. We started signing expensive players and giving them a lot of money. I don’t agree with that. Just because a player costs 150million does not mean he’s good for the team. It depends on the character of the player.”
