The Red Devils are considering a move for Real Madrid playmaker James Rodriguez who is being offloaded by the Spanish giants.
The 28-year old Rodriguez’s contract at the Los Blancos set to expire at the end of the 2020-21 season and Manchester United FC will be looking forward to signing the player on a cut-price deal.
Moreover, the Columbian international is unlikely to be awarded a new contract at Real Madrid by coach Zinedine Zidane after appearing in just 13 matches this season for the Spanish side.
Rodriguez spent the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons on loan at Bayern Munich and made his mark by scoring 15 goals and assisting 20 in 67 matches for the Bundesliga side. The 28-year old won the German league in both of his seasons at Munich.
However, at the end of Rodriguez’s two-year loan spell at Bayern Munich, the German side did not desire to activate their obligation to buy the player which was included in the loan agreement signed initially between Bayern and Real Madrid. Thus, Rodriguez came back to Spain and has played the 2019-20 season in the Real Madrid shirt.
Manchester United FC manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is known to be a huge admirer of the player and had been reported to initiate discussions with Real Madrid in the past over a possible loan deal for the 28-year old Rodriguez.
However, at that time Real Madrid were only willing to let the player depart on a permanent basis. Los Blancos signed the Colombian international for a fee of £71million from AS Monaco after the player’s stunning World Cup campaign in 2014. However, the Spanish side could risk losing the attacking midfielder for free if they do not sell him this summer.
The onset of the coronavirus pandemic and its adverse impact on footballing incomes and the transfer market has forced even top European clubs to consider offloading certain players to generate funds to finance transfers in the summer.
If Real Madrid offers Rodriguez to the Red Devils for a cheap price, Solskjaer would be looking forward to pouncing upon the opportunity and sign the player.
