Manchester United 2-2 Southampton Match Report | EPL 2019/20

Manchester United are held to a 2-2 draw by the Saints at Old Trafford, as Southampton conjured up a last-minute equalizer. For the Red Devils, Rashford and Martial were on the score-sheet as United looked destined to win three points. A win would’ve taken United to the third place in the Premier League but a draw keeps them at fifth.

Southampton started the scoring, as Pogba was the culprit of being too slow at the edge of his own box. He was pick pocketed and seconds later Armstrong scored at the far post and gave the Saints a deserving lead. The Saints were better than United in the opening exchanges as they pressed higher up the pitch and created chances.

After being hit by a goal the Red Devils scored a couple of goals in quick succession with Rashford and Martial. Martial has now scored 50 goals for the Red Devils but was also the culprit of missing a few today.  Even Rashford missed a golden opportunity as his shot was blocked by a last-ditch tackle from a Southampton full-back.

Southampton were in the match with only one goal down and kept the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Greenwood quiet. Solskjaer had used all his substitution opportunities by the 84th minute and when Williams was injured, the Red Devils had to play with 10 men. Brandon Williams was initially substituted for an ailing Luke Shaw, but then Williams was on the receiving end of a nasty head-collision.

Unluckily, United had to see out the last 5 odd minutes of the game with only 10 men on the pitch. In almost the last minute of added time, Southampton got themselves a corner and were piling on the pressure on United. The Saints scored from the corner, as their substitute, Obafemi bundled the ball beyond the goal line, despite pressure from Lindelof.

The Red Devils had a golden opportunity to win this match and cement their place in the top-four of the league. But with Leicester, Chelsea and United all dropping points, it will be an intriguing battle for the top four places. Manchester United face Leicester City on the last day of the season, and until then everything is unpredictable.
