Manchester United FC have finished the Premier League season on a high with a 2-nil victory over Leicester City. The Red Devils have achieved of what was thought of as impossible mid-way through the season, and have achieved a top-four finish in the league. With 66 points this season, Manchester United finish as third in the Premier League table.
The goals against the Foxes came as Fernandes scored from the spot and Lingard slotted the ball into an empty net. United started with their strongest possible 11 except for Shaw, who is still injured and wasn’t in the squad. The Red Devils started on the front foot even though they knew a draw would also take them to the top four places.
Leicester City needed a win if Chelsea got a victory, but surprisingly sat back and defended deep from the beginning. Brendan Rodgers set up a defensive side and wanted to hit United on the counter with Vardy’s and Iheanacho’s pace. But Leicester failed to trouble De Gea in goal as the goalkeeper got another clean-sheet this season.
With this victory, De Gea has 113 clean-sheets for the Red Devils in the Premier League, which is a club record.
United played well for most parts of the match and threatened the Leicester goal quite often with Martial missing chances. Bruno scored in the first half but was deemed offside, and the match was even at half-time.
In the second half, United came out stronger as Leicester tried to push on knowing that they needed a win. In the 68th minute, Martial came bearing down on the Schmeichel’s goal but was brought down by Evans in the box. Bruno scored from the eventual penalty and in the dying minutes of the game, Lingard scored his first goal of the season in the league.
The Red Devils went on a 14-game unbeaten run in the Premier League, from January, to secure the third spot. With Champions League football back next season at Old Trafford, the Red Devils with build in the summer. The summer transfer window opened today and with guaranteed Champions League next season United will look to get their transfer priorities.
