All about Tom Heaton and his transfer to Manchester United

According to Fabrizio Romano, Tom Heaton has passed his medical at Manchester United on Wednesday. Tom Heaton’s transfer is finally set to be completed and obviously, he didn’t cost even a single penny.

His transfer does bring more questions after all because United already has three first-team goalkeepers. Sergio Romero is officially released by Man United but yet to sign for a new club, Lee Grant, David De Gea, Dean Henderson, and now Tom Heaton.

This transfer indicates that United will release either one or two of those four goalkeepers in their current squad. Ideally, it seems that he has been signed as a replacement for Romero.

The confirmation regarding his transfer:

Earlier Fabrizio Romano had said that Heaton is set to undergo his medical this week and will sign a two-year contract.

But now Romano has officially confirmed the news that Tom Heaton has passed his medical at Manchester United this week. He signed a contract until 2023 with an option to extend for a further one year. He will be unveiled as a United player on 1st July.

Speaking to Her We Go Podcast yesterday, Fabrizio Romano said: “Today, he passed his medical with Manchester United. So, Tom Heaton successfully passed his medical and now we can consider him a Manchester United player. The contract will be signed for two years, with an option for one more season on July 1st, but the deal is done. Heaton is joining Manchester United.”

The former United academy graduate had been previously linked and it is expected that he will be a backup option to Dean Henderson and David De Gea.

What does the transfer mean to other Man United goalkeepers ?

As reported by the Manchester Evening News, Sergio Romero was released by Manchester United earlier this month. His treatment at United has been previously questioned, with his wife launching a scattering attack on the club.

Even David De Gea has been linked to a lot of transfer rumours. Dean Henderson has been tipped to be the next regular goalkeeper to play for Manchester United ahead of De Gea. Lee Grant is expected to sign a new contract with the club.

Tom Heaton’s transfer comes in as a replacement for the departing Sergio Romero as United needs more cover in their goalkeeping spot.

Tom Heaton and his poor injury record:

Tom Heaton has been hugely unlucky with Injuries with two incidents highlighting his injury woes.

Back in 2017, Heaton endured a shoulder injury that kept him down for up to six months and he had a considerable issue last year when he suffered a serious knee injury that sidelined him for a very long time.

The 35-year-old has not played a Premier League game since the first day of the 2020 season, so there may have been a few worries about his injuries in front of his possible move to United.

But it seems that he will fit to play for United now.

Is he available for Manchester United’s first PL game for the upcoming season:

Manchester United faces Leeds United on the 14th of August and it will be a great encounter to watch. Tom Heaton currently is injury-free and is expected to be available for the match. He will not be playing in the starting XI for sure as we think either Dean Henderson or David De Gea will take that spot.
