Rangers legend Ally McCoist believes that Manchester United could still steal a great deal by signing Antonio Conte from Tottenham Hostpur.
Things are not going easy for Manchester United as the club is looking to sign a permanent manager. Numerous managers have been reportedly interviewed and discussed, but not all of them have the desired qualities that the United board needs.
With Ralf Rangnick destined to move to the club counselor role, a new manager will take over the helm at Old Trafford. Coaches like Ajax’s Erik ten Hag and PSG’s Mauricio Pochettino have been the key targets but there is one man who could turn the entire story upside down.
Manchester United was rumored to be heavy favorites to land the former Inter Milan manager Antonio Conte. Things were looking smooth until the last moment when Tottenham Hotspur sneaked in to sign Conte last summer.
Although Manchester United has a slim chance to sign the Italian manager, Tottenham, and Antonio Conte are currently going through a rough patch. There are many challenges to deal with and the manager is asking for more support from the club, which has been looking hard to come by.
Ally McCoist believes that this could be the opportunity Manchester United can exploit and lay their hands on one of the most tactically sound managers in world football right now.

While having a chat with FourFourTwo, Ally McCoist said:
“I think United missed the boat by not appointing Conte at the end of last year, and in normal circumstances, you would think that ship had sailed, however, nothing surprises you in football. You hear the rumors that Mauricio Pochettino wants to go back to Spurs, and doesn’t fancy United, so I wouldn’t rule out Conte going to United.”
“The one thing Conte wants is financial backing, and I am not sure he is happy with what he is getting at Spurs. He has done a few strange interviews and made a few comments that would indicate that this is the case. United have great players, but they are not a great team, and I think Conte could help mold them into that. It is a time for real change.”
McCoist also believes that Manchester United should also be targeting two LaLiga winning coaches- Zinadine Zidane and Diego Simeone.
The upcoming names could certainly change United’s fortunes and with Antonio Conte, the club will be getting a manager who can openly discuss all the issues quite clearly at the club. The Italian tactician could get the financial backing at this club.
Conte has a two-year contract with Tottenham and the chances of him leaving the club midway through this season look quite slim. If we consider the current circumstances, not everything has been completely decided and the club is still looking for the right manager.
Could it be Antonio Conte or Erik ten Hag or a completely new manager? Only time will tell.
