Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera revealed his sadness at the way Paris Saint-Germain won the Ligue 1 title and admitted that he never wanted to leave Premier League giants Manchester United.
The 30-year-old Herrera explained that he had differences of opinion with the United board before deciding to walk away from Old Trafford to join French giants PSG as a free agent in last summer transfer window.
Although the streets of Paris are paved with gold for modern footballers given PSG’s wealthy Qatari ownership, Herrera has been left deflated by how his first league season in the Ligue 1 ended.
Similar to the Dutch Eredivisie, France’s Ligue 1 season was abandoned before crunch matters could be resolved on the pitch reason being the coronavirus outbreak in France.
Runaway leaders Paris Saint were declared as Ligue 1 champions for the 9th time in the club’s illustrious history, but it left a bittersweet taste for Spanish star Ander Herrera. Although Herrera yearned for the first championship in his career to be a jubilant moment to share with team-mates and in front of supporters, he had to celebrate the title under lockdown rules.
While speaking to ESPN Herrera said, “To be honest, I didn’t celebrate it, I love football but I love to play football and win trophies on the pitch. I hope we can fight for the cup titles that we still have to play on the pitch with fans in the stadium and let’s see if we can also fight for the Champions League.
Upon leaving Manchester United in the summer, Herrea revealed that he never wanted to leave Old Trafford but had no choice due to the misunderstanding with the club board, he said, “When I look back a year ago, my intention was not to leave Manchester United”. Herrera won the FA Cup, Carabao Cup and the Europa League with Manchester United during his five-year spell at the club.
